years ago I liberated the Amber series by Roger Zelanzey from my brother's bookshelf with every intent to read them. I finally got around to starting them a couple weeks ago. So far I've read the first two. Part of what has been interesting is that I'm guessing my sister's first AD&D character was based off of Corwin so I've been looking for what it is about Corwin that would make her want to do that. But maybe she just liked the name. It is entertaining to read something so obviously pulp fantasy, so obviously from the 1970s. And there is something annoyingly charming about Corwin's swagger, he wears a silver sword and a cape but I could see him being at home with a cowboy hat and a sixgun on his hip.
However the Amber series is currently on pause right now while I read a book called The Female Man. And yes it's a book where I hide the cover while reading it in public. Also very 70's but sci-fi instead of fantasy. I was told that it would blow my mind and 60 pages in my mind remains unblown but I have another 100 pages or so to go before the end. I am so far unconvinced of it's greatness but I'll see it through till the end and try to hold off on judgment till I actually finish it. But between the Amber series and The Female Man I'm starting to feel kind of 70'sed out. I think I'll need something modern after all this. Or maybe go really old and read the Plato book I found at the antique store the other day.
